>
> WASHINGTON – Today, H.R. 3817, the Valle Vidal Protection Act was
> passed by the House of Representatives.
>
> U.S. Representative Tom Udall, D-N.M., the legislation’s author,
> marked the passage saying, “I am pleased the House of Representatives
> has recognized that the true values of the Valle Vidal will be
> preserved by protecting it from energy and mineral extraction and
> development. The Valle is worthy of protection and the passage of this
> bill is a testament to the thousands of New Mexicans who have declared
> their support to preserve this unique and versatile landscape.”
>
> H.R. 3817 was introduced by Udall on September 15, 2005 and seeks to
> protect the 101,794-acre Valle Vidal area of the Carson National
> Forest from coalbed methane development.
>
> The Forest Service has successfully managed the Valle Vidal since the
> tract was donated to the Forest Service in 1982 by Pennzoil Co., which
> never allowed drilling in the area. Since that time, the area has been
> the stomping ground for one of the largest elk herds in the state, for
> 3,000 Boy Scouts every summer from the adjacent Philmont Scout Ranch,
> and for ranchers, hunters, fishers and many others who go there to
> enjoy unparalleled outdoor activities.
>
> “The ‘Valley of Life,’ as it was named by the Pueblo Indians and
> Spanish founders, is truly a land of many diverse uses which greatly
> contribute to the New Mexican way of life,” Udall said.
>
> On June 21, 2006 the bill was passed by the House Resources Committee
> by a unanimous, voice vote which readied it for a full House vote.
>
> “For generations, the people of New Mexico have appreciated all the
> Valle has to offer, and warmly welcomed others to partake in the
> experience. Now that this bill has been passed by the House, my hope
> is that it gains the support and momentum needed to carry it through
> the Senate, under the guidance of our Senators,” Udall concluded.
