Trungpa Rinpoche's son, Gesar Mukpo, wrote a poem in memory of his aunt, which is offered today. BREATH OF THE LION May Bodhichitta flourish, Where does the mind go? Freedom from deception, Birth, old age, sickness and death. Wonderful dance of light and dark. Where is my mind? Death of body, Aura of golden light. Beautiful knowledge of impermanence displayed. Where does my name sit? Light as can be. Turn heartbreak into warriorship. This is the world of appearance. Have faith in the Dharma. Be present for once. Just in this moment, Our minds can be found. Love for all beings, Makes joy out of sorrow. Seeing the nature, Aware of this breath. In loving memory of Tessa Pybus. She will be missed. Gesar Mukpo March 29, 2006 Used by permission of Gesar Mukpo. Notes: Bodhichitta is awakened mind or heart; dharma is the teachings and the truth of the teachings. To honor his life and teachings, we offer this quote from a seminar on the Line of the Trungpas, which he gave in 1975. To listen to an excerpt from the seminar, go to: http://www.chronicleproject.com/stories_55.html A PRACTITIONER'S LINEAGE Why does the contemplative tradition and tradition that I come from, the Practicing Lineage, or the Kagy?, exist? It is not just an accident or a matter of chance. Rather the whole thing is somewhat planned or programmed, to the extent that there is an intelligent awareness or a vision at work, of how a practitioners' lineage can exist and continue. As far as that vision is concerned, it is a prolonged sense of commitment to humanity and to working with the neurosis of humanity. The Practicing Lineage is not based on practitioners locking themselves up in their meditation cells so that they become social nuisances. But practitioners in our lineage also work with their commitment to their teacher and with surrendering, openness and devotion -- as well as with commitment to the rest of the world: all sentient beings. From "The Mishap Lineage," in THE COLLECTED WORKS OF CHOGYAM TRUNGPA, Volume Five, page 340. Thanks to Walter Fordham and the Chronicles of CTR Project for hosting and posting the audio excerpt from THE LINE OF THE TRUNGPAS, Talk Seven. All material by Chogyam Trungpa is copyright Diana J. On April 9, 2003, Ocean of Dharma was launched with 108 subscribers. There are now more than 4,000 members of the list. There was no significance to the founding date, in the mind of the moderator. A few days later, however, one of those early subscribers sent the moderator a copy of the only e-mail Chogyam Trungpa is known to have sent in his lifetime. Completely coincidentally, this e-mail was sent on the same date, April 9, that Ocean of Dharma was founded -- but a few years earlier. Twenty-two years ago today, on April 9, 1984, while he was in a meditation retreat, Chogyam Trungpa sent the following message via the internet:] From: Kalapa Manor To: VDH [an abbreviation for Vajradhatu, the name of his international group of meditation centers] Subj: Retreat Pain and pleasure are one Peacock and goose are delicious Listening to our hearts we found prediction In the form of crocodilian tears Alligatorial laughter Aren't we lucky to be in retreat! C.T. Mukpo 9 April 1984 Kalapa Manor __________________________________________________________ This message was posted to Dharmanet, a very early form of list serv for the Shambhala Buddhist community, from Kalapa Manor, the site of Chogyam Trungpa's 1984 retreat in Mill Village, Nova Scotia. Chogyam Trungpa went to some efforts to post this message, with the help of retreat staff who worked several days to overcome difficulties. Dharmanet -- for those of you interested in things technical -- sat on top of Envoy-100, an X.25/Datapac packet net mail/crude bulletin board system, and served as an electronic mail system for the Buddhist community in the 1980's. Kalapa Manor was provided with a small CRT terminal, a printer, and a 300 baud modem. Thanks to Mark Szpakowski for saving this communication and sharing the information with all of us. Labeling phenomena creates a feeling of a solid, definite world of "things." Such a solid world reassures us that we are a solid, continuous thing as well. The world exists, therefore I, the perceiver of the world, exist. Meditation involves seeing the transparency of concepts, so that labeling no longer serves as a way of solidifying our world and our image of self. Labeling becomes simply the act of discrimination. There is no need to struggle to be free; the absence of struggle is in itself freedom. This egoless state is the attainment of Buddhahood. The process of transforming the material of mind from expressions of ego's ambition into expressions of basic sanity and enlightenment through the practice of meditation -- this might be said to be the true spiritual path.
