Once must develop the ability to know the situation. In other words, one has to develop a panoramic awareness, an all-pervading awareness, knowing the situation at that very moment. It is a question of knowing the situation and opening one's eyes to that very moment of nowness, and this is not particularly a mystical experience or anything mysterious at all, but just direct, open, and clear perception of what is now. But we can stop ourselves, we can accept the noise. The noise also contains silence. We must put ourselves into it and expect nothing from outside, just as Buddha did. I don't feel open and receptive to what is really happening. Chogyam Trungpa: Well, that seems to be good, actually, utterly good. That open and closed fickleness tends to bring a lot of understanding. Whereas if you completely buy in to something, so to speak, then it?s like being caught in the jaws of a crocodile. You have no (outside) reference point. You are just completely buying in. That seems to be one of the problems with many present spiritual advertisements: either you are in it or you are not in it. Out in. You can't actually experience the space between the two. That is a problem, and that seems to be a spiritual materialistic trick to use on people: trying to save them from their problems. That approach is based on a hesitation or inability to provide everything legitimately, step by step. The leaders of a trip feel somewhat inadequate, so they tell potential students, "Buy it or don't buy it." That seems to be too cheap. Q: So is it best to have a questioning attitude? CT: Yes, absolutely. Spiritual discipline is not based on becoming somebody else. But you become you in your enlightened version. That is the whole point. But our attitude toward it is overloaded, full of preconceived ideas that stem from the development of a self-aggrandizing ego and its manipulative processes. The mere act of handling money -- just pieces of paper -- is viewed as a very serious game .The energy money takes on makes a tremendous difference in the process of communication and relationship. If a friend suddenly refuses to pay his check at a restaurant, a feeling of resentment or separation automatically arises in relation to him. If one buys a friend a cup of tea -- which is just a cup, hot water, and tea -- somehow a factor of meaningfulness gets added. It seems to me that it is worthwhile to work with the negative aspects of money in order to gain some understanding about ourselves. We must try to discover how to view this embarrassing and potent commodity as a part of ourselves that we cannot ignore. When we relate to money properly, it is no longer a mere token of exchange or of our abstract energy; it is also a discipline. Then we can deal with it in a practical, earthy way as a master deals with his tools. From "Green Energy," in THE HEART OF THE BUDDHA in THE COLLECTED WORKS OF CHOGYAM TRUNGPA, Volume Three, 473-474. What is the real difference between the experience of a practitioner then and our experience now? Chogyam Trungpa: There?s not very much difference. The main difference is that they heard different noises then. These days we might hear airplanes flying above, and in those days, they might have heard flies buzzing about .In actual reality, as far as the living situation is concerned, it?s essentially the same, then and now. In those days, caves were routinely used for sitting practice, not for romantic reasons but because, in that geographical area, there were lots of caves. You didn't have to spend money to build a cabin; there were holes in the mountains already. You just went and lived there. Nowadays, we can't find many holes in the mountains around here, so we have to build retreat cabins. It?s simply a question of geography. Actually things haven't changed that much. We might romanticize the "good old days," but if you were there right now, you wouldn't think that those were the "good old days" at all. You would have the same experience then as now, anyway. It?s just a gap in time, a time lapse. From "Trungmase and the Three Idiots," Talk Three in THE LINE OF THE TRUNGPAS, an unpublished manuscript being edited for publication. In particular, a lot of the teachers of my lineage, the Kagyupas, didn't want to settle down in one place, and they traveled in large encampments, or caravans It was possible to set up a magnificent capitol, a temporary monastic city, right on the spot. They set up residence tents as well as the main meditation hall where ceremonies were conducted....This provided possibilities of establishing complete splendor in one night. After a few days, the whole camp could be disassembled and the people would continue on their journey. That tradition is extraordinarily powerful and wondrous. The age of encampment extended from the 14th century into the late 16th century, as far as Tibetan monasticism goes . It?s an interesting point that we haven't developed that kind of tent culture in America at all. The way to reduce pollution and save ourselves from urbanization might be to have a fantastic magnificent dharma tent culture. You could establish the whole situation at once, on the spot, with all its splendor. The monastery could fulfill its duties wherever it goes. Then the monastery or practice center would fold up and move somewhere else. That is a very heroic and very Buddhistic approach: nothing is particularly permanent, but you keep on moving all the time. "But I must say, it was rarely boring." At the age of sixteen, Diana left school and broke with her upper-class English family to marry Chogyam Trungpa, a young Tibetan lama who would go on to become a major figure in the transmission of Buddhism to the West. In a memoir that is at turns magical, troubling, humorous, and totally out of the ordinary, Diana takes us into her intimate life with one of the most influential and dynamic Buddhist teachers of our time. Diana led an extraordinary and unusual life as the '"first lady" of a burgeoning Buddhist community in the American 1970s and '80s. She gave birth to four sons, three of whom were recognized as reincarnations of high Tibetan lamas. It is not a simple matter to be a modern Western woman married to a Tibetan lama, let alone to be married to a man who is a major religious figure and is sought out by thousands of eager students. Surprising events and colorful people fill the narrative as Diana seeks to understand the dynamic, puzzling, and larger-than-life man she married -- and to find a place for herself in his unusual world. Rich in ambiguity, Dragon Thunder is the story of an uncommon marriage and also a stirring evocation of the poignancy of life and of relationships -- from a woman who has lived boldly and with remarkable originality. Author: Diana J. Mukpo was born in England in 1953. She attended the prestigious Benenden School until she left at the age of sixteen to marry Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Mrs. Mukpo moved to the United States in 1970, where she remained with Trungpa Rinpoche until his death in 1987. During their marriage, she pursued intensive study of dressage. She is now the owner and director of Windhorse Dressage, a riding academy located in Providence, Rhode Island. Co-Author: Carolyn Rose Gimian is the editor of many of Chogyam Trungpa?s books, notably Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior, The Collected Works of Ch?gyam Trungpa, and The Sanity We Are Born With: A Buddhist Approach to Psychology. A freelance writer and editor, her writing is featured in Best Buddhist Writing 2006. She lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Forthcoming from Shambhala Publications, Inc. Horticultural Hall 300 Massachusetts Avenue Boston, Massachusetts 02115 www.shambhala.com Praise for DRAGON THUNDER: ?Diana Mukpo?s extraordinary story as wife, lover, and friend to one of the great spiritual teachers of the twentieth century, reveals her to be a courageous, independent woman with deep understanding of her husband?s life and teaching. It is as though you were dressed in your swimsuit, standing on the diving board with a pool in front of you, and you ask yourself: "Now what?" The obvious answer is: "Jump." That is daring. You might wonder if you will sink or hurt yourself if you jump. You might. There is no insurance, but it is worthwhile jumping to find out what will happen. The student warrior has to jump. We are so accustomed to accepting what is bad for us and rejecting what is good for us. We are attracted to our cocoons, our selfishness, and we are afraid of selflessness, stepping beyond ourselves. So in order to overcome our hesitation about giving up our privacy, and in order to commit ourselves to others' welfare, some kind of leap is necessary.
